The Problem: Damaged Dolley Wheel
The rubber on one of the dolly wheels had completely worn down, leaving the steel core exposed. As a result, moving the piano with this dolly not only became unsafe but also left deep scratches on the flooring. It was clear that the entire dolly caster assembly needed attention to ensure the piano could be safely and smoothly transported again.
The Solution: Replacing All Three Wheels
To fix the issue, I used my trusty homemade “Jack in the Box” kit—a simple yet effective setup consisting of a wooden box housing a small 2-ton bottle jack and a collection of tools tailored for piano repair jobs.

- Using the bottle jack from my kit, I carefully lifted the piano, ensuring it remained stable and secure throughout the process.
- Replacing the Wheels
- All three wheels on the piano’s spider dolly caster assembly were replaced with high-quality replacements. This upgrade not only resolved the immediate safety and usability issues but also ensured the dolly would provide reliable service for years to come.
- Testing the New Assembly
- Once the new wheels were installed, I tested the dolly to ensure it moved smoothly and safely without causing any scratches or damage to the floors.
